Valve Position Indicator

The Valve Position Indicator (VPI) is a dedicated position feedback device designed to provide accurate and reliable indication of valve actuator position in marine and offshore applications. The system is particularly suited for installations where direct observation of the actuator is impractical or impossible, including submerged and inaccessible locations.

Description

The VPI operates by measuring hydraulic oil displacement through an internal gear wheel mechanism coupled to a precision 3-wire potentiometer. As the actuator moves, the displacement of hydraulic oil is translated into a corresponding position signal, enabling continuous monitoring of valve status and actuator position. This design ensures dependable feedback for both submerged and non-submerged valve installations. For applications requiring only local visual indication, the Local Indicator version utilizes hydraulic pressure to mechanically switch the display between OPEN and CLOSE positions, providing clear status confirmation without the need for electrical signaling.

Operating principle

The Valve Position Indicator measures actuator movement by monitoring hydraulic oil displacement within the actuator system.

  • Hydraulic oil flow drives an internal gear wheel mechanism.
  • The gear wheel is mechanically connected to a precision 3-wire potentiometer.
  • Actuator movement is converted into an electrical position signal.
  • The signal provides continuous feedback of valve position to the vessel's control or monitoring system.
  • Suitable for both remote monitoring and automation applications.

Local indicator option

The Local Indicator provides a simple visual confirmation of valve status at the installation site.

  • Operates using internal hydraulic pressure.
  • Displays OPEN or CLOSE position locally.
  • No remote signal transmission required.
  • Ideal for submerged or difficult-to-access valve locations.

Benefits

  • Reliable valve position feedback
  • Supports remote monitoring and control systems
  • Suitable for harsh marine environments
  • Enables monitoring of submerged actuators
  • Improves operational awareness and safety
  • Compatible with vessel automation systems
  • Flexible solution for local and remote indication requirements

Typical Areas of Use

  • Ballast water management systems
