Local Level Gauging
The Local Level Indicator is a mechanical valve position indicator designed to provide a clear visual indication of a valve's OPEN or CLOSED status directly at the installation location. It is particularly suited for applications where valves are installed in submerged, enclosed, or otherwise inaccessible areas where direct observation of the valve actuator is not possible.
Description
The indicator operates using hydraulic pressure from the valve control system. When the incoming hydraulic pressure exceeds the preset relief valve setting, hydraulic oil is directed into an internal chamber, causing a piston to move. This movement mechanically actuates the indicator, displaying the corresponding valve position status. The design provides a simple and reliable method for local valve position verification without requiring electrical power or complex instrumentation.
Applications
- Ballast systems
- Bilge systems
- Hydraulic valve systems
- Offshore installations
- Marine automation systems
- Submerged valve locations
- Inaccessible valve installations
- Engine room and utility systems
Key Features

- Mechanical operation without electrical power
- Hydraulic pressure-actuated design
- Suitable for submerged valve installations
- Clear visual indication at valve location
- Compact and robust construction
- Reliable operation in marine environments
- Simple installation and maintenance
Operating principle
The Local Level Indicator functions by utilizing hydraulic pressure from the valve control system.
- Hydraulic pressure is supplied to the indicator.
- When the pressure exceeds the internal relief valve setting, hydraulic oil enters the actuator chamber.
- The oil movement drives an internal piston.
- The piston mechanically moves the indicator mechanism.
- The indicator displays the corresponding OPEN or CLOSED valve position.
This provides positive local confirmation of valve status where direct visual inspection of the actuator is not practical.
Benefits
- Improves operational visibility of valve status
- Eliminates the need for direct actuator inspection
- Suitable for submerged and hard-to-access locations
- No electrical power supply required
- Reliable mechanical indication
- Supports safer vessel operation and maintenance activities
- Designed for demanding marine and offshore environments
Typical Areas of Use
- Ballast tank valves
- Sea chest valves
- Bilge valves
- Remote hydraulic valve systems
- Offshore process systems
- Flooded compartments and submerged installations
